Barbers Have A Very Long History, But Not Just Cutting Hair!
The barber’s art is an ancient, honorable profession. While the early Roman’s lacked the high-backed chairs, shaving cream and the candy cane-striped pole Americans associate with barbers, ancient barbershops were the gathering place for the city’s elite to get a haircut, shave, massage and manicure dating back to 296 B.C. Today, Barber Classic in Carmel, Indiana continues that time honored tradition, offering classic cuts along with professional styling services.
The word “barber” originates from the Latin word “barba,” meaning beard. Historically, barbers were known for providing haircuts and shaves as well as tooth extraction and surgery. In ancient Greece, barbers were among the country’s leading citizens. The Greek statesmen and ruling elite came to their barbers to discuss the politics of the day while having their hair cut and beards trimmed. Many ancient rulers, including Julius Caesar, paid great attention to their appearance and appreciated the service their barber provided.
The earliest recognized organization of barber’s dates back to 1096 in France when William, archbishop of Rouen, prohibited beards causing the demand for barbers to grow across Europe. In 1210 A.D. the barber profession separated from dentistry and medicine when the distinction between “surgeons of the long robe” or doctors and “surgeons of the short robe” or barbers was officially established.
In 1893 the barber profession got another boost with the establishment of a school for barbers in Chicago. Today, professional barbers and hair stylists are trained in cities across America including Fishers, Carmel and Indianapolis, Indiana. The well trained barbers at Classic Barber Shop in Carmel are uniquely equipped to continue this tradition of professional service and quality customer care.
